Just a Thought

Have you ever looked at an organization or company's core values and thought about how they demonstrate these values? One company that caught my interest was a company my dad has been part of for years now: Oglethorpe Power. Oglethorpe is a big electric company that helps feed power to its sister company Georgia Power which in turns powers the whole city. My dad works in their accounting department, hence why I am an accounting major, for quite a few years now. He steady coming home telling me about how the company does this and that for their employees, and it was not until I interned there one summer that I was able to see it for myself. It did not take me too long to realize what the organization's values were without having to do any research.

Upon my first day at work I was bunbarded with a bunch of introductions and little office supplies from upper management and my fellow co-workers. After getting pass all the introductions my supervisor showed me around the facility to make me feel more comfortable about my new work environment. Then to top it off he treated me to lunch along with another supervisor in my department. It was at lunch that I asked what was with all the nice treatment. I felt special and did not know why. My supervisor told me this is how we treat all of our employees. At this moment I realized it was not just about me, but just the company's values and my supervisor executing the demonstration of set values to the employees.

Oglethorpe Power is all about creating a family atmosphere for employees to be comfortable in. They feel this way it will create an environment for people to want to work and work together because it is one big family running a business together. They have different events like company picnic or golf tournament between departments almost similar to different families at a family reunion. Within the company are 3 main departments Opc, Gtc, and Gsoc and each person reps his company like it was his family name. Even though there is a lot of fun to be had at the company, employees still understand the significance to get work done in a timely fashion. They work hard and play hard at the same time. Oglethorpe constantly is thanking its employees for their hard work to keep the company going and prosperous.

Need I say what the values of the company was or is it that obvious.
